Students competed in three categories: life science, earth science, and physical science. Each category awarded first, second, third, and fourth place winners. Every first place winner was also entered into a competition for Grand Prize Trophies, which were presented to the top three project winners. The Science Fair is a long standing Tate's tradition and we were honored to welcome three Tate's Alumni as judges this year. The Violins of Hope project has brought a collection of restored violins, once played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust, to Knoxville. Silent for decades, the instruments are now being used to teach students about history and resilience.

Recently, Tate’s School hosted the violins, giving students a hands-on way to connect with the stories of Holocaust victims and survivors, promoting lessons of tolerance and remembrance.

The violins are also on display at the Digital Motif building on South Gay Street, and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra is preparing to feature them in concerts honoring those impacted by the Holocaust.

Through music, this project preserves memory and promotes healing in the community.

Last week, Tate’s School fifth graders took a deep dive into World War II history with a hands-on learning experience led by Jeff Swanson and The Five Oh First Group (TFOFG). Swanson, who founded TFOFG two decades ago, and his team of WWII re-enactors visited the campus to bring history to life for students.

Dressed in authentic WWII uniforms, the group set up interactive stations showcasing different aspects of a soldier’s life. Students had the opportunity to try on helmets and parachutes used by paratroopers and explore wartime equipment, including German and American rifles (without live ammunition), demolition boxes, ammunition belts, and communication devices like walkie-talkies and field phones.

"World War II was a defining time in our nation’s history. Getting to tell these stories in front of young people is a hands-on way to help them understand the hardships during that era,” said Swanson.

Tate’s School Principal Kaye Simmons emphasized the impact of the experience, saying, “When students can experience a historically accurate soldier’s story and can see and touch the soldiers' field gear, history comes to life for them.”

Thank you to WATE Channel 6 for their coverage of this special event!

Recently, Tate's PreK-5th grade students were visited by "The FABFRIZ", Ms. Susan Frizsell, owner of Fab Friz Education and a teacher and educator for many years. Ms. Frizsell created "Tent Adventures", integrated, hands-on lessons in science, history, and reading tailored for our students. Preschool through third grade were able to participate in a "Bug Safari" where they traveled to the South American jungle and became amateur entomologists, collecting and classifying a large variety of bugs by attributes, color and type. The lesson was focused around Maria Sibylla Merian, a remarkable 17th century naturalist, famous for her expertise in entomology and art featuring her insect discoveries. Fourth and fifth grade students also went exploring in the jungle to uncover secrets about the lives of current and former real life explorers, including Percy Fawcett and Harriet Chalmers Adams. Presented with a character box containing clues about their explorer, students worked in groups to travel into the tent to uncover facts using literary elements, grammar, and vocabulary words to complete the profile and story of their explorer. Watch out for quicksand! They had to dig the correct story problem out for their character. Finally, it was time for a resolution. The graveyard held those clues….who survived the jungle and who didn’t? ... See MoreSee Less
