8th Grade students recently participated in a survey of the Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area by studying at amphibian activity zone in the vernal ponds. Common species like bullfrogs, toads, and other large species can reproduce anywhere. But smaller and less competitive species engage in explosive breeding and need water that does not have competing, frogs or fish. This causes wetland areas that fill up with temporary water in late winter/early spring vital for some of these less common species. What a wonderful learning experience!
